VISION

Creating a clear vision for your loved one with an intellectual disability is one of the most powerful things you can do—and enthusiastically sharing that vision is your best resource. You know your child’s interests and dreams better than anyone, and communicating the possibilities opens doors for inclusive opportunities.

When you speak about your child’s future, you’re painting a picture of their life filled with intention and belonging. Your vision is a compass to guide each decision: does this choice bring us closer, or move us further away from our vision of the future?

Sharing your vision enables others to see your loved one as you do—to recognize their gifts and see them for all that they are, and inspires others to think creatively in support of achieving your goals. Without it, others will rely on their own assumptions and biases that will not reflect your hopes for the future.

That’s why it’s essential to imagine the possibilities, embrace their interests and potential, and create a vision that celebrates who they are and all that they may become.

Explore. Try new things—try everything! And build a life filled with joy, purpose, and opportunities!

A Vision for your loved one

  • Attending preschool, their community school, graduating, and pursuing post-secondary education

  • Joining a neighbourhood soccer club, baseball team, hockey team, swim club, dance class, ballet school, cheer squad, scout troop

  • Playing in a band or singing in a choir, taking piano or guitar lessons

  • Finding employment, volunteering, participating in community events, travelling, and building meaningful friendship

  • Having room-mates and a home of their own

  • Living a life filled with joy, connection, and opportunities

It starts with intention—visualize their future, believe in their gifts, and share the vision with everyone on their journey!

Genuine inclusion means that every individual is accepted and valued as an equal and essential member of a community, regardless of background, belief, or ability.

True inclusion goes beyond mere presence and ensures that all individuals have the opportunity to participate fully and contribute in their own unique way.
